Grants, Subsidies, and Scholarships

I have made the statement that there are FEW grants for for-profit companies and none that I know of for a person.  This has elicited many responses where I am defending my statement.  I have heard of a for-profit company that aligned itself with a school and got a grant.  There is a farm that received a subsidy from the government for fencing.  There was the person who said to me, well my husband received a grant to attend school.  To attend school is usually called a scholarship, but it is true that people get scholarships all the time, so if you call scholarships grants, then yes you usually can get a "grant" for personaly use.  They are called scholarships.

Now I said few grants for for-profit companies.  Farms are for-profit companies.  If the government didn’t allow subsidies for farms, there would be less farmers because it doesn’t pay well.  Good farmers are out in all types of weather.  They generally can’t take a long vacation (who else would milk the cows twice per day?)  Their livelihood can be hurt on a whim (think FDA talking about e coli in tomatoes last year and then finding out it was onions AFTER most tomato farmers had to plow under their crops). so yes there are a few grants, subsidies, etc. for some for-profit businesses.

Having said all this, scholarships can be found for free – talk to your guidance counselor or your financial adi office.  Don’t pay someone to find you a scholarship.  If you need a scholarship to attend school, you probably need all that money. If you have to pay a hugh sum of money for the "list" of grants for your business, run away quickly. If you want a list of grants for your business, try the free stuff first.  Go to SCORE, usually found at your Chamber of Commerce.  SCORE is retired executives that help you with your business for FREE. Not that I don’t want your money, but I want you to be satisfied that I have provided you with the research and/or grantwriting services that you need for the money you spend.  I want happy customers.  An unsatisfied customer is worse than a competitor, because that customer will tell others what a bad job you did.  I hope this post lets you know that I have your bests interests at heart.

I answer most questions for free.  Email me at g3grants@gmail.com and I will either answer your question, or tell you I don’t know.
